  • Sow in full sun and loose, well-drained soil after last spring frost when soil has warmed. Or plant in fall two weeks before first frost date. Compact or wet soil will stunt growth. Barely cover seeds with soil; they require filtered light to germinate. Keep moist until germination. Start indoors six weeks before the last spring frost date. Plants will not require fertilizer.
  • Clary sage will produce large, low growing leaves its first year. Flower stalks will appear in the second year. Sow seeds each year for continuous blossoms. In cold climates, cover plants with deep mulch after the ground freezes in fall.

Clary sage, also known as eyebright or cleareye, has been used as a medicinal herb since ancient Greece. Its 3-4? flower spikes are covered with whorls of aromatic, pale purple to white blossoms that attract bees and other pollinators. Easy to grow and deer resistant.
