Zygocactus

Find Christmas Cactus at Alsip Home & Nursery

Christmas Cactus also known as Zygocactus is another popular plant around the holidays. The bright colors are eye catching in red, orange, pink and white. Lots of bright light and careful on the watering will give these plants a long bloom time. When in bloom allowing the plants to slightly dry between watering is beneficial and when done blooming allowing more time between watering is needed. These plants also appreciate being put outside when we are frost free. They may even re-bloom in the summer months with the difference of the day and night temperatures. When they are put outside they do need some protection from the mid day sun. We carry these plants in 4”, 6” and 8” hanging baskets.

Light

Bright indirect lighting. North or East window is ideal.

Temperature

Average temp during growing season is 68F

Watering

During growing season keep soil moist but not soggy.

Blooming the Next Year

Preparation for flowering should start in September. Temperature range for the setting of buds is between 55-60F for 6 wks. If these temps are kept the amount of darkness given is not important.

If temperature gets above the previous mentioned temps, then the plant needs to be given 13 hours of darkness for 6 wks. A dark room, piece of opaque cloth, or covering with a paper bag for the recommended time is necessary. If this is not feasible place the plant in complete darkness until buds set.
During flower bud formation stop fertilizing and only water enough to keep the leaves from shriveling.
Once buds have formed it can be brought into normal light and watering can be resumed to normal. Enjoy for seasons to come!
