There’s so much to love about the summer season, the number one benefit of course being all the time we get to spend outdoors. After months of being cooped up during the winter we’re ready for gardening, hiking, grilling, swimming, and attending all of the great outdoor concerts and festivals. Of course when our summer is just heating up, mosquitoes decide to crash the party. And as if they weren’t annoying enough, the recent Zika outbreaks are raising a vital cause for concern. So what are we left to do? Surely not stay in! We’ve put together a few recommendations in order for you to say: “Adios Mosquitoes! We’re just not that into you.” Here are five ways to repel mosquitoes.
Sometimes the application of repellents can be just as bothersome as the insects they repel. When seeking a hands free solution, look no further than Thermacell‘s line of portable repelling lanterns, backyard torches, and clip-on holsters. Thermacell gives you the freedom to enjoy the outdoors without becoming nature’s next meal. Thermacell products create a 15ft x 15ft barrier by activating a small mat saturated with allethrin, a synthetic copy of a natural repellent found in chrysanthemum plants. Powered by butane cartridges, heat disperses the repellent to create a mosquito free zone. With the dual purpose as a light source and repellent zone, Thermacell lanterns and torches are perfect when camping out in the woods or just outback on the patio.
Citonella oil used in torches and candles are also very popular. You can view a few of those popular items here.
Area Mosquito Repellent
Whether you’re throwing the annual backyard barbecue, pool party, or just want to enjoy your outdoor living space; there are mosquito repellents available for you to apply to specific areas of your property to keep pesky mosquitoes at bay. We recommend Mosquito Beater by Bonide because it effectively repels mosquitoes for up to 3 weeks, is nontoxic, biodegradable and pleasantly scented. Apply with an easy to use shaker can or a ready to spray bottle with hose attachment. Mosquito Beater contains: geranium oil, cedar oil, lemon grass oil, garlic and citronella oil.
When protecting your family, especially children from mosquitoes you may find you want the least invasive option. Superbands are made of an adjustable coil to easily slip over a wrist or ankle. Their unique blend of all natural lemongrass, citronella, and gerniol oils safely and effectively keep mosquitoes away. Superbands offer a fast and easy solution without sprays or lotions that can be harmful in the hands of children. Superbands offer approximately 200 hours of protection, great for picnics, camping, and fishing with the family!
Simplicity is often key to a good repellent, especially when on the go. Great for hiking, OFF! Deep Woods Insect Repellent provides long-lasting protection against biting insects such as ticks, mosquitoes, black flies, sand flies, chiggers, and gnats. It also repels fleas and no-see-ums, so you can enjoy the outdoors uninterrupted. Effective up to 8 hours.
Available in 8oz. Aerosol Spray
Use your garden to combat unwanted mosquitoes and insects. Citronella, AKA scented Geranium, is widely known and used in many repellent products for it’s oily fragrance. You can easily incorporate plants such as citronella into planters around your outdoor living spaces to help keep mosquitoes at bay. While citronella is very popular, there are other plants available in our greenhouse that are just as effective. You can read about them in the blog below.
