Plated Lizard Care

Plated Lizard Care About
The Plated Lizard is a calm lizard, found in Africa. It is very easy to accustom to frequent handling. This lizard will lose its tail to ward off predation and is skilled at wedging itself in tight spaces for escape. They are quick despite their stubby legs.
Max Size 12-18 Inches
Life Span 4-10 Years
Habitat
A large tank 48 x24” works best. A big cave or buried pipe is great as they love to dig and hide themselves. They require a shallow water dish changed daily.
  • SUBSTRATE: Any loose packed material so they can dig and burrow. Barks and cypress mulches will work.
  • LIGHTING: Overhead lighting is needed for day and night temperatures. They can see the red night bulbs so a blue is choice. UVA/UVB lighting is essential, 5.0 or 8.0 is preferred.
  • TEMPERATURE: 74-80˚F cool end, 85˚F warm end, and 90˚F for basking. Heat rocks are welcomed in their enclosurevery two weeks.
Diet
75% insect and 25% soft fruits. They love earthworms. Remember to dust with calcium powder and to gut-load
crickets. Soft fruits include papaya, baby food and strawberries. Do not use hard fruits such as apples. Bananas should be avoided as they rob the lizard of calcium and raise phosphorous levels.
Water They require a dry environment, but must have access to a reasonable water bowl.
Grooming
Bath your lizard for 10 minutes once every month in a tepid bath. Even though they will enjoy it, do not exceed the 10 minutes. Afterwards towel dry and place them under their basking light
