Announcing: Humane Indiana to Open New South Shelter within St. John Alsip Home & Nursery

With much excitement, Alsip Home & Nursery is happy to announce a partnership with the Humane Society Calumet Area. Alsip will be opening its doors on October 1st to welcome newly named Humane Indiana to share the garden center’s space for their new South Shelter.

Humane Society Calumet Area

Run as a separate entity from Alsip Home & Nursery, Humane Indiana will rent out the facilities left available from ATTR’s closure last April. While it was not feasible for Alsip to continue running their own rescue, members of Alsip Home & Nursery’s ownership and staff are ecstatic that a continuation of the initial goal, helping adoptable dogs and cats find loving homes, can still proceed within the residence.

“Alsip Home & Nursery is ever changing. As a staple in the community, we want to establish an awareness for the impact we have and want to make sure we uphold ourselves as an example. Partnering with another rescue, by welcoming their operation under our roof, is our way of keeping the promise to continue helping animals in need.” – Rich Christakes, Alsip Home & Nursery CEO

South Shelter Grand Opening Event this October!

Together Alsip Home & Nursery and Humane Indiana will celebrate the grand opening of the new South Shelter on October 14th. Locals are encouraged to stop in for the ribbon cutting ceremony, visit with adoptable dogs and cats, browse pet supply specials, and enjoy family fun activities and raffles.

Future Community Plans in the Works!

Plans are in the works for the two establishments to team up for more upcoming events which include wildlife, pet, and gardening seminars that will be made available each month. The opportunity for classes and groups to request private field trips to learn about rescue animals and hands-on planting workshops are also on the docket.

“Local boy and girl scout troops, as well as day care and preschool classes have enjoyed coming into Alsip to plant a flower or learn about small animals in the past. Now with the Humane Indiana partnership, we can help facilitate educating our community’s kids with their wildlife rescue animals. Not only do we have the ability to create fun memories for these children, but hope they recognize the importance of nature as they grow-up” – Sandy Richwalski, Pet Department Manager, Alsip Home & Nursery.
