They are the only birds that can hover, fly backwards, forwards, sideways, straight up or down, and even upside down. Their wings can beat 70-80 times per second, giving them an average flight speed of 25-30 miles per hour. Hummingbirds are spectacular to watch. As fuel for flight, hummingbirds must often eat over twice their weight in nectar and insects every day. It is estimated that a human with a weight-specific metabolic rate equal to that of a hummingbird would need to take in 155,000 calories a day!

Don’t forget that you can add plant material to your landscape to attract hummingbirds. Once they identify a stop on the nectar tour, the birds keep coming back. And their tastes aren't as exotic as one might imagine: they favor the old-time trumpet vine, but they love most tubular flowers or petals that are red, orange or pink.
