Bird Feeders

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, bird watching is second only to gardening as the nation's fastest-growing hobby. The energetic and colorful visitors to your feeder have a way of brightening the grayest winter day. But stick with it into spring and summer and enjoy a new variety of migrant visitors as well as some old friends in new spring colors. Feeding at any time brings nature closer to us. It enables us to catch a glimpse of the 'wildness' around us - and to stay connected with it.
A key to attracting the birds you desire, is selecting the right feeder. Alsip Home & Nursery has hundreds of bird feeder styles, including tube feeders, hopper feeders and platform feeders, as well as the remarkably effective Yankee Flipperâ„¢ squirrel-proof feeder.
You want the feeder to be seen easily from wherever you plan to watch it and easy to fill from wherever you store your seed. It ideally should be close to natural shelter, such as trees and shrubs, so the birds have cover and can feel safe while waiting their turn at the feeder. Evergreens' heavy foliage shields them from the winter winds and offers a hiding place from predators. But keep your feeders 10 feet from such cover; branches can provide a good leaping spot for squirrels and cats. Feeders also should be placed either less than a yard or more than 10 yards away from windows to minimize bird/window collisions, a major cause of bird deaths.
