What To Do When Spring Arrives Early

March was 17 degrees warmer each day than the average temperature for the month.  With that being said we all have seen Forsythia, Pears, and Magnolias come into and out of bloom within 2 weeks.  What we are in store for is an early flowering season across the board with plant material.  This will also mean that both annual weeds and insects will be out early and in above normal fashion due to a warm winter.

Tip: Get the crabgrass control down ASAP.

Jonathan Green is our preferred and recommended brand of bagged fertilizers and grass seed.  It’s never too late to apply a preventative annual weed control product since these weeds will continue to germinate throughout the entire season.  If there are weeds that have germinated an application of liquid weed control can be applied now.  Grubs will be out early as well.  Take the necessary precautions to keep them under control.  Apply season long grub control soon.

How to handle insects: Bayer 3-1 applied to roses will insure a season of pest and disease free rose flowers

Is it too soon to plant?

No, take advantage of this weather to get your flowering shrubs, perennials and evergreens in the landscape.  If we do get a frost, there are several ways to protect your plants against a frost.  Burlap or a old sheet can be placed over tender plants, but the best product on the market is Wilt-proof/Wilt stop.  These products are applied in a liquid spray directly to the foliage and puts a transparent coating on the leaves and keeps the frost away.

Pansies are a great cool-weather annual that can add some instant color to any landscape or container and they will handle a frost.Great for unpredictible weather conditions!

We will be bringing in Geraniums, veggies, and other great annuals for everyone wanting to get a jumpstart on their spring flowers.  These will arrive before Easter.

Speaking of Easter, we have a large selection of Lilies, hyacinth, tulips, daffodils, and other flowers in bloom for gifts and plantings.

We have expanded our fruit tree and shrub selection this year to include over 15 varieties of fruit trees and shrubs.  Included in these are P. ALLEN SMITH endorsed blueberries, pink lemonade blueberries, and the ever popular fruit and apple cocktail trees.  The earlier these are planted the bigger the yield as the root systems become more established the plant can concentrate of fruit production.

Protect your flowering Crabapples now from apple-scab and blight by applying a liquid fungicide when the flower buds are present, during full bloom and 2 weeks after all the blooms have fallen off.  There is also a systemic drench that can be applied now to the root system to prevent the same diseases.  Bothe products provide season long protection and will ensure you trees to keep their leaves on all summer.
